Biography

Barbara is a working artist/teacher living in the Bronte area of Oakville. As a contemporary impressionist, she paints landscapes, florals, and still-life. A gentle palette, expressive brushstrokes, and considered compositions invite the viewer in for a closer look. One of her greatest joys is sharing her time with students and fellow artists.  Originally from the east coast of Canada, her work is influenced by the coastal edges, her heritage, and the Canadian forests.  Her work can be found in homes and galleries in Canada, the UK, and the US.

Workshop Description

Join Barbara as you explore a looser, more impressionistic approach to the traditional street scene subject matter.  Barbara will guide you as you learn how colour relationships, edges, composition, shape, and value play an important role in conveying a strong visual statement. Expect to talk about perspective in depth and as well, play with a variety of colours and colour harmonies in the palettes of the great impressionists.  You will be showered with lots of individual attention to guide you in a manner for painting in a representational but also an impressionistic style.

Materials List

NOTES:

  1. Students will provide their own supplies including table covers and easels.

  2. Please note absolutely NO turpentine or solvents will be permitted in any workshop.  Oil painters please use a solvent free painting medium, such as Gamblin Solvent Free Gel or linseed oil.

  3. I will be painting with oil paints, but feel free to paint in the medium of your choice.

  4. Please feel free to bring whatever supplies that you have … as this is just my list...

Paints

Titanium White ( perhaps a larger size just for white )

Cerulean Blue

Ultramarine Blue (any variety, French, light, dark … all are fine)

Sap Green and/or Olive green

Yellow Ochre

Burnt Sienna

Alizarin Crimson or Rose Madder

Dioxazine Purple

Raw Umber

Optional Colours

Cadmium Red, Orange or Yellow (if you like brighter colours)

Indigo is a favourite of mine but not necessary

My palette is pretty subdued :)

Brushes

Bristle or synthetic brushes meant for oil/acrylic

I love to use Flat bristle brushes - sizes 4, 6 and 8 (optional would be a 2 or a 10)

Bring a palette knife if you have one!  My favourite is a DeSerres Brand #2006

Canvases

Either stretch canvas or canvas boards (both are fine)

Squares are my favourite, such as 12 x 12, 14 x 14 , or 16 x16

Also rectangle canvases are just fine as well, such as 11 x 14, 12 x 16, etc.

Other Supplies

Disposable palette sheets to mix your paints on

Paper towels or old rags

A plastic container for water, if needed

Pencil

Rubber gloves (if you wish to paint with them on)

Tips

  • Feel free to bring a notebook if you wish!

  • I find a box in the back of your car that fits your canvas sizes is handy for getting a wet painting home.

  • And sometimes I just wrap my brushes in a rag, put them in a bag and clean them with soap and water when I get home. Just shape and leave them to dry.

  • With colour choices … please don’t worry … if you have other blues or greens, we can work with what ever you have … my priorities for painting are shape, value and then colour … I also bring a variety for sharing (I find colour to be a very personal thing)
