Artist Statement
My art is a continuous exploration of intuitive abstraction, deeply rooted in the physical and emotional landscapes of my multicultural journey. Working primarily with acrylics on canvas, I explore the expressive potential of texture, colour, layering, and gesture to translate experiences and emotions that are often difficult to articulate through words.
My process is intuitive yet deliberate. I build surfaces through heavy texture, allowing each layer to respond to the one before it. The accumulation of material creates depth and movement, while contrasting colour relationships introduce moments of tension, energy, and light. By moving away from traditional, recognizable imagery, I invite viewers into an open-ended visual conversation where personal interpretation becomes part of the experience.
At the heart of my current work is an exploration of struggle, hope, and resilience. My multicultural journey and experience of adapting to a new home have shaped the emotional foundation of my practice. Each canvas becomes a space where weight and light, uncertainty and possibility, coexist.
Through abstract forms and tactile surfaces, I seek to transform personal experiences into universal emotional expressions. Ultimately, my work is an invitation to pause, connect, and discover a sense of optimism, renewal, and hope within life’s complexities.
Artist Bio
Sonia is a self-taught contemporary abstract artist originally from Pakistan, who began her artistic journey in the UAE and now lives and works in Milton, Ontario. Her practice explores migration, cultural transition, identity, and belonging, with a particular focus on the tension between struggle and hope.
An accountant by profession, Sonia brings a distinctive perspective to her art, balancing a mind shaped by structure, precision, and analytical thinking with an intuitive and expressive approach to abstraction. Painting provides her with a space to process experiences and emotions that are often difficult to express through words.
Working primarily with acrylics and mixed media, Sonia creates richly layered, textured surfaces through experimentation with colour, gesture, and material. Layers and marks become visual metaphors for displacement, uncertainty, adaptation, and rebuilding. Within these struggles, moments of light, vibrant colour, and openness represent resilience, renewal, and hope.
Her self-taught practice is grounded in curiosity, discipline, and emotional exploration. As a member of the Fine Arts Society of Milton (FASM), Sonia continues to develop her artistic voice while connecting her global experiences with the Halton Region’s creative community. Through abstraction, she transforms personal challenges into visual expressions of resilience, possibility, and hope.
